Knit 1 Blog 1 Exhibition

Hi all,

Some of you may be aware that Craft ACT is holding an exhibition NEXT MONTH focussing on Knitting and Blogs - the show is called Knit 1 Blog 1, and they are keen to get local donations of hand-knitting for display, from those of us who also have knitting blogs. This show is already in our Calendar, but thought some extra info could be interesting for people...

The show will be at Craft ACT's Craft and Design Centre, Level 1, North Building, Civic, from 13 July to 26 August 07, and entries need to be in by Tuesday 3rd July. There is no entry fee (unlike many art exhibitions!).

The show will be quite interactive - in addition to displays of knitted objects, there will also be projectors projecting a revolving list of blog sites on the walls. Computers connected to the internet will be in the gallery, so visitors will be able to click around on sites and open other blog sites.

Barbara is also on the lookout for knitters who would be interested in running a workshop or two (and being paid for it), both for beginning and experienced knitters. These would run on the weekends of 21 - 22 July, and 11 -12 August. If you are interested in offering something, please contact Barbara McConchie. I don't think you'd need to be one of the exhibiting knitters to teach a workshop - so if you're Blogless, but would like to teach something, please drop Barbara a line.

You can read more about it - appropriately enough - on their Blog : http://knit1blog1.blogspot.com/
E-mail Barbara for an Entry Form.

From the Craft ACT web site :
Curated by Barbara McConchie, Knit 1 Blog 1 exposes the social phenomena of knitting and blogging. The Festival of Contemporary Art opens at the Australian National University School of Art Gallery 5:30pm, Craft ACT 6:15pm and Festival Party at the Canberra Contemporary Art Space 7pm (Friday 13 July).

Knit in Public Day

Late notice, I know, but it took some time to get consensus...

OK, for those of you who feel like braving the elements to put your knitting on display then rock up with a picnic lunch, hot drink, warm clothes, and your knitting, of course :

Saturday 9 June (TOMORROW)
The gazebo at the centre of Glebe Park, Civic
12 - 1.30 pm

Happy knitting all!

Beginning Knitting

The Craft Store is offering two beginner knitting workshops this month:

Third workshop added: Woden - Saturday 23rd June 10:00am

Also this month The Craft Store is offering a buy 2 get 1 free deal on its yarns. Frankly, it's not a huge selection, but last time I passed through Civic the new Patons Shadow Tweed was in, plus the usual suspects of acrylic baby yarn etc.

If you are on the mailing list, you will also get a voucher for "Buy 5 balls of yarn, get a free set of needles"

Don't look at me, look at the road! That's how accidents happen.*

On Saturday 26 May, the Big Merino at Goulburn moved the 800m from its home of 22 years to a new postion on the Hume Highway. The journey took 1.5 hours.

Apparently we'll be able to go up into Rambo's head again from late August. I wonder if the eyes will light up again, too?

Oh what a tangled web ...

The ANU Centre for Continuing Education is offering a weaving course this semester.

Simple block weaves and learning to weave with Monique van Nieuwland starting Wed 18 July.

Further details.

Knit in Public Day

This worldwide event is fast approaching (Saturday 9th June).

Some suggestions gathered so far :

A picnic for knitters in Civic or elsewhere (Karen)

Knitting in the display window at Cassidy's in Kingston (Bells)

Knitting 'flash mob' - we have a list of places and times, and suddenly gather in each place to knit for say 20 minutes, then mysteriously disappear, and go to the next place. The schedule could be something like 11am Parliament House, 12pm National Library, 1pm Botanic Gardens etc (places that are free to get into, and have easy parking) - and you can attend as many or as few as you like (Jejune)

Not sure if I can attend much of anything, as we're going to Sydney that weekend, but I'm happy to sort out a flash mob schedule if there's interest. I think it could be quite fun :)

It doesn't have to be hand knits, although they are very welcome. Old blankets, clothing etc. can be dropped off and Bell's will clean them for free and the Salvos will distribute them to families in need.

AIDS Baby Jumpers

It seems everywhere I look knitters are taking up needles for the AIDS babies of Africa. The tea room at work looked like my regular SnB last week with several women knitting these little jumpers.

Today's Canberra Times contains an article on women living at Araluen Village in Weston Creek, who are making a contribution. I use Kate Leith's picture from the article.
If you are interested in knitting one or more of these jumpers or a little doll, the PDF patterns for a jumper is here, and for a doll, here. Further details can be found at AIDS Net.

Welcome

Welcome to the group blog of the combined Canberra knitting groups.

Canberra is home to several independent knitting groups. For some time we've been looking for a way to keep in touch with what each of the groups is up to and to communicate with each other, particularly around knitting events and opportunities.

Soon you will be able to find from this site, a group calendar, lists of local wool shops, a fibre tour of the Southern Tablelands, patterns and local charity knitting opportunities.

If you belong to a local knitting or crafting group, please let us know and we'll link to your group online or provide contact details in some other way.
